I read a book called "Merchants of Oran" by Joshua Schreier. which describes Oran before the French got there and when they got there in the 1830s.  The point of the book is that, unlike the accepted notion that the French brought civilization to the Jews of Algeria, the Jews  in Oran were powerful

Yes, I do remember the bullets and explosives, the barbed wire and the curfews, the paratroopers and the OAS. But I also remember long strolls on beautiful sandy beaches, and family picnics in the cool shade of the forest of the Atlas foothills.

Watched Comme les cinq doigts de la main , a French film from 2010 starring Patrick Bruel, a pied-noir from Tlemcen. Somewhat convoluted and over-the-top plot, but offered some insight into the dynamics of a Jewish pied-noir family.
